About Us

The Prostate Cancer Risk Clinic at Huntsman Cancer Institute is for men who may be at risk for prostate cancer due to genetic mutations or a family history of cancer.

You may know that women with BRCA mutations have increased risk of breast cancer. It is less well-known that men with BRCA or other cancer-related mutations are at greater risk of developing prostate cancer.

The purpose of the Prostate Cancer Risk Clinic is to create a personal screening plan and help schedule any follow-up care for men at high risk for prostate cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can visit the clinic?

The Prostate Cancer Risk Clinic is for men ages 35-70 who meet one or both of the following criteria:

  1. Men who have had genetic tests showing a cancer-related gene mutation or syndrome
    • BRCA1 or BRCA2
    • Lynch syndrome
    • Li-Fraumeni syndrome
    • DNA repair genes such as ATM and CHEK2

  2. Men with a strong family history of prostate cancer
    • A first-degree relative (brother or father) diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 55 or younger
    • Two or more first- or second-degree relatives with prostate cancer

When I visit the clinic, what will I do?

  • Review your personal and family health history and lifestyle factors that may contribute to prostate cancer risk
  • Have blood and urine testing to screen for prostate cancer
  • Get a physical exam
  • Talk with a clinic team member about your individual screening plan and follow-up care based on test results
  • Get a prostate biopsy if test results are abnormal
  • Talk with a doctor or genetic counselor about the chance to take part in a research study about prostate cancer risk

Do I need genetic testing before I come?

No. Your family history of prostate cancer may be strong enough to qualify you for this clinic. If you haven鈥檛 been tested, your visit can start with genetic counseling to determine what tests may be needed.

Our clinic will determine if you need a genetic counseling appointment at the time of scheduling, and you would need to come in and see a genetic counselor prior to meeting with Dr. O鈥橬eil in the prostate clinic.
