Cost of Services
All services on the wellness bus are free and confidential.
Services for Children
Most of our patients are 18 years and older. However, if your child is overweight or obese and has risk factors for diabetes, they may qualify for services.
What to Expect at the Screening
When you get to the bus, we will ask you to sign in and fill out a form. All the questions on the form are optional.
What Should I Bring to Get Screened?
Nothing! Just bring yourself or a family member or friend who might need our services.
Fasting for Blood (Sugar) Glucose or Cholesterol Screening
If you fast before a blood sugar or cholesterol test, you will get the best results. However, you can still get your glucose and cholesterol checked even if you have recently eaten. It will, however, affect your test results.
Who Works on the Wellness Bus?
Community health workers and registered dietitians provide screenings and services on the bus. University of Utah students, training to become future health care workers, provide referrals to health and social needs services and programs.
Our staff are here to support, educate, and provide advice on how to improve your health and nutrition. We also provide education and advice on how to manage chronic diseases, such as pre-diabetes, diabetes, and hypertension.
Interpretation Services
We have bilingual and culturally competent staff members from all backgrounds. We also have interpretation services available for over 240 languages and dialects.
We Can Connect You to Basic Resources
Factors other than health insurance or medical care can contribute to your overall health status. The Wellness Bus can help connect you with many free or low-cost resources including:
- food and housing assistance,
- medical care, and
- dental care.
We do this with the help of local community organizations.
Why Does Utah Need a Wellness Bus?
If we don鈥檛 take action now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one out of three people will have diabetes by 2050. Communities who don鈥檛 have enough access to medical services have a higher chance of developing diabetes because they don鈥檛 have regular access to screening, prevention, and educational services.
The good news is that often you can prevent diabetes and other chronic illnesses.
Test for Prediabetes
. The sooner you know if you have prediabetes, the sooner you can work to reverse it. This way you can prevent type 2 diabetes.
