Inherited arrhythmias are arrhythmias that are caused by genetics. This means they are passed down (inherited) from parent to child.
Just like other types of arrhythmia, they cause your heart to beat too fast or too slow.
Inherited arrhythmias can cause many different heart conditions. These include the following:
- long QT syndrome (LQTS)
- short QT syndrome
- Brugada syndrome
- catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT)
- arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC)
- idiopathic ventricular fibrillation (IVF)
- progressive cardiac conduction system disease (PCCD)
- hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

Inherited arrhythmias are dangerous because they can increase your chances of sudden cardiac death. Sudden cardiac death can be deadly because it causes your heart to stop beating.

Treatment & Research
We evaluate and treat patients who may have inherited arrhythmia. If your doctor suspects you have a genetic change (mutation) that causes arrhythmia, your doctor will give you a commercial genetic test to see if you have this mutation.
If your genetic test is negative, we may invite you to participate in research where you'll receive more thorough genetic testing.
